Joshua Benson and Joan Iaconetti
“Above / Below”
January 23 - March 23, 2020
New York City is growing taller every day. New buildings and skyscrapers sprout from the ground like plants from soil, standing tall and proud on the skyline. In these buildings, people live and work, taking advantage of their shelter and resources. And like trees in a forest, it’s the complex network of roots below the surface that supports this growth. Whether on their daily commute or exploring the city, over 4 million people ride the subway every day. Mostly unseen from the outside, it’s a massive network of 472 stations, with 665 miles of track that carry riders from one destination to the next. This building is one such tree, hosting thousands of people every week from all around NYC. As a church and community center, observing and seeking to understand our city allows us to better love and serve the people within it. We can't really understand the city if we just see it from above, or see it from below—to really know the city, we need to see both. Joan Iaconetti and Joshua Benson present different perspectives of our city and images from the outside and from within. In this exhibit, we invite you to take a closer look with renewed perspective and perhaps find beauty and wonder in unexpected places both above and below.
