We have all experienced some form of breakdown this past year. Whether it is through loss and grief or through a reckoning or revelation, the world and the life we know have been reshaped in some way by the impact of this global pandemic. 

In this two-part exhibition "Breakdown", Misato Pang creates art in response and as part of her process of understanding her own breakdowns: breaking down who she is in terms of her ethnic identity and her Christian faith; breaking down what she has held to be true and assumptions to be challenged; and breaking down her own practice as an artist and pushing her own boundaries of craft and creativity. This exhibit highlights events and moments from the past year that are captured by the works Pang created in the studio and a collection of voice memos and audio recordings made on the artist's mobile phone, most of which reflect her struggle to fight for hope and justice for humanity while wrestling with meaning of life and implications of faith. The interweaving of hope and lament is an important nuance of this story as it encapsulates faith in seasons. The synthesis of visual and auditory cues are meant to recreate spaces and moments in time, hence inviting the viewers to reflect and enter these intimate spaces that happened in isolation and solitude.

In this vulnerable act of opening up and sharing her own breakdown, Pang invites the viewer into this liminal space, allowing us to reexamine what we may need to release or rebuild.

展覽陳述
過去一年，我們都經歷了某種形式的崩潰。無論是通過損失和悲傷，還是通過反思或啟示，我們所認知的世界和生活都已在全球性流行疾病的影響下以某種方式得到改變。

在這個二部展覽「崩潰」中，彭美聖透過藝術來回應及思考她自身的心路歷程：包括種族身份和基督教信仰上的身份解構、個人原則及道德觀念上所面對的挑戰，以至她作為藝術家於工藝上所領悟的界限等。該展覽重點介紹了過去一年中工作室內創造的作品所捕捉的事件和時刻，以及記載了她在手機上錄製的語音備忘錄及傳發的通話。當中細節反映了她爭取希望和為正義而奮鬥，以及嘗試去理解人性、生命的意義和信仰的涵義等過程。希望和哀嘆是這個故事的重要元素，因為它涵蓋了信仰上經歷的高峰與低谷。透過視覺和聽覺上的融合，該展覽邀請觀眾們進入這個親密的空間去反思及細味每個作品，從而審視各自所需要釋放的包袱或需要重建的東西。

展覧会ステートメント
皆過去一年に何かしらのBreakdown（精神・肉体等の崩壊・衰弱）を経験したのではないだろうか。世界的に流行したパンデミックにより、我々が認識している日常生活は喪失からの悲しみ、気づき等で再構築されてきた。

ミサト・パンは二部構成の「Breakdown」で、彼女自身のBreakdownをアートの中で深堀した：民族的なアイデンティティやクリスチャンとしての信仰でのBreakdown、揺るぎない価値観に疑念を抱かれた時のBreakdown、アーティストとして限界を超える創出・創造力を生み出そうとした時のBreakdown。当展覧会は、パンがスタジオや携帯電話上で制作した作品、ボイスメモ、オーディオ・レコーディングを展示している。作品は過去一年のイベントや瞬間を捉え、彼女が希望・正義への葛藤、及び人生・信仰での苦悩を表している。この物語には、希望と悲しみが重要な要素として絡み合い、信仰を包み込む。視覚・聴覚の刺激を融合することで、空間と時間を再構築し、鑑賞者を親密ながらも、孤立と孤独が併存する空間へと導く。

パンはBreakdownを露わにして共有することで、鑑賞者を美術の境界域に案内し、各々手放すべきもの、又は再構築すべきものを再探索させるのである。

Drawn to the intense concentration of saturated colors and abstracted forms in Fauvism and Die Brücke, as well as the crudeness of Outsider art, I am fond of creating a peculiar narrative that exists on the cusp of reality and imagination. Images are often composed in a manner that is spontaneous and reactive to the process of mark making, while the interlocking forms and color shifts are an attempt to create dimensions of space that could reveal themselves over time.

藝術家自述
深受野獸派和橋派藝術的飽和色彩和抽象圖案影響，我很喜歡創作一些在現實和想像世界之間徘徊的畫作。我的製作過程一般都是很即興的。透過利用一些相互緊扣的形狀和顏色上的偏移, 畫像能呈現不同層次的空間；而這些空間也隨著個人的體驗及想像而逐漸改變。

アーティスト・ステートメント
フォーヴィスムとブリュッケで多用される飽和色と抽象的なフォーム、及びアウトサイダー・アートの粗雑さに惹かれ、私は現実と想像の狭間にある独特なナレーティブを好んだ。画像はその時の瞬間、マーク作成の過程で起きた反応を捉え、絡み合うフォームと色の変化は時間と共に空間の次元を作る手段と考えている。

Born and raised in Hong Kong to Japanese and Chinese parents, Misato migrated to the United States during late adolescence. Up until recently, she lived in New York City and relocated to St. Louis in the past year. Misato's works overlap personal narrative and cultural events, some of which allude to current social phenomenon and political discourse in Asia. She has participated in various residencies and exhibitions in the United States and Japan. Her most recent exhibition, "— Ten Years", was both a celebratory and introspective moment to consider the effects of diaspora on art making in the age of globalization as a first-generation immigrant.

個人簡歷
香港出生並成長於港日家庭，彭美聖在十七歲時移居美國修讀藝術。過去七年她寄居於紐約市，直至最近搬遷到聖路易斯。彭美聖的作品交疊了個人故事和文化事件，其中更隱藏了對亞洲當前的社會現象及政治話語的評論。她在美國和日本參加了各種交流和展覽，而最近的個人展覽更描繪了她過去十年在美國作為第一代移民所經歷的改變和領悟。

アーティスト紹介
香港人と日本人の両親のもと、ミサトは香港で生まれ育った。10代後半にアメリカに移住し、ニューヨークに定住していたが、去年からセントルイスに活動拠点を移した。ミサトは自身の経験と文化イベントから作品を創出し、アジアの社会現象と政治状況もテーマとして扱っている。彼女はアメリカ、日本で複数のレジデンス・プログラム、展示会に携わり、直近の展示会「－Ten Years」では、初代移民としてグローバル化の中での、ディアスポラ（民族離散）がアート制作に対する影響を表現した。
