Exploring the depths of grief and the human heart through the lens of Jox Teodocio's reflective photography.

With this W83 Gallery exhibit, we celebrated Jox as a photographer and friend of Redeemer. He hopes that his art can help others experiencing loss and grief. The Redeemer West Side vision and values remain faithful to the teachings of the Bible, which alone is viewed as the infallible Word of God.

about the artist

Born and raised in the Philippines, Brooklyn-based photographer Jox Teodocio is a self-taught artist. His passion for photography ignited when his sister Owen gifted him a film camera 30 years ago. It was not until he received a digital camera for his birthday, 10 years later, that he practiced photography more regularly.

From 2006 to 2007, he exhibited photos through juried exhibitions in Denver, CO. During that time, the Denver Voice published his photo essay about homeless individuals, “Kapwa Tao” (fellowman). The Center For Fine Art Photography accepted his entry for the Denver International Airport Invitational Exhibition in the same year.

Jox shoots medium-format digital images. He enjoys collecting cameras used as props in movies. He is interested in combining digital and film photography into a hybrid process to produce images that connect modern technology with traditional photographic media and lenses. He would like to be a full-time photographer when he grows up!

from the artist

"I lean on my photography when life gets difficult. It enables me to express feelings that words fail to convey.  People, places, and things - when observed in a meaningful way - often reveal messages of hope & courage in the face of adversity. These photographs have helped me move forward through some of the most difficult times in my life. I hope that the images in this humble collection enable someone to find meaning, strength, and determination in their daily struggles.” J.T

exhibit statement

Jox’s photography is a deeply moving exploration of the complexities of grief, loss, and the resilience of the human heart. His work has had a positive impact on his own life and has helped him get through challenging years.

His images are based on a very personal story and shared with the hope that they can help someone else experiencing loss, grief, and tough times. For him, his creative process is one of the things that has helped him spiritually and emotionally, inspiring him to bring hope and encouragement to others.

Each image invites viewers to engage in personal reflection, offering a gentle space to confront and process emotions that often feel too heavy to carry alone.

This exhibition is also a tribute to those who have offered support during emotional low points and life’s challenging moments, celebrating the collective strength of community and the kindness that fosters healing.

We hope that with empathy, sensitivity, and creativity, "in search of refuge for my heart” inspires and encourages all who attend to find comfort, hope, and connection. May it serve as a reminder that shared experiences of vulnerability and resilience can help us heal, rebuild, and renew our city and communities.
