"Of Bucking the Darkness": A Group Exhibition - Corey Hayes, Chelsea Horvath-Black, Jennifer Ahn
February 16 - April 28, 2024
W83 Ministry Center presents "Of Bucking the Darkness”, an exhibition that features the artistic work of Jennifer Ahn, Corey Hayes and Chelsea Horvath-Black. It grants viewers the opportunity to process individual interpretations on loss and hope through their work and passion that lies outside the confines of the traditional art purpose.
Through their artistic practice and pieces, the artists share part of their creative life, explore the ways art helps to resist and overcome the multi-layers of loss in life through uncommon perspectives of hope, renewal and restoration. They invite us to meditate on the different seasons of life: loss, trauma, hope, faith, reflection and renewal through journeys that lead toward life, beauty and transformation.
“Of Bucking the Darkness” shares three different perspectives that, together as a whole, blur the boundaries between loss and hope as separate experiences, becoming a harmony that longs for community, unity, and divine justice. Each artist’s attempt to process and overcome loss and hope gives viewers the opportunity to confront their own lives. As a collective, the artists invite the community and call out for necessary hope, faith and change. They invite us to question ourselves and our communities.
How do we face, embrace and learn from difficult times and struggles? How do we keep loving our neighbors and our city, but also stay hopeful while we experience journeys of loss and darkness?
We hope this group exhibition shows that hope lives in us and that all people offer and perceive their own creativity and sensibility to our city and community.

about the gallery
At the Gallery at W83, we cultivate art and community on the Upper West Side, providing space for personal engagement, community conversations, and spiritual reflection, and collaborate with local artists from diverse backgrounds to explore universal themes of culture, community, and faith.
We bring together different perspectives in this space as an invitation to join in conversations we believe are vital to us all. We affirm the artist's right to express their views independently, and the views expressed by the artists are their own and do not necessarily represent the Gallery at W83 or Redeemer West Side.
