New York Poetry and Song presents The Gospel According to Bach, a performance of various arias and chorales from the two great Passions of Saint Matthew and Saint John. Bach’s overarching architecture and development of musical material are signature marks in these pieces, just as they are in his non-liturgical compositions. These aspects assert the force of mind that was Bach’s. It is, however, in the ordering of movements, detailed symbolism embedded into melodic lines, and emotional breadth steeped into the bones of these works, that the heart of Bach is revealed — revealed in a profound profession of faith.
