From a global pandemic to protests over racial injustice, events in these recent months are calling us to attention, prompting us to examine and re-examine how we relate to, interact with, and care for one another. In his book Culture, Terry Eagleton writes that the “self is ours on trust, as a set of capacities which it is our moral duty to develop to the full.” This development of self and how we manifest our sense of moral duty, however, can only truly be seen and tested in relationship to one another. It is only in community that our flaws and failings along with grace and growth can be witnessed. Self may be ours on trust, but our relationships are also ours on trust - we are responsible for and to one another.
Katie Joy Nellis and James Hoston invite us to practice the art of seeing one another in their series of portraits. What do we see when we look at each other? How do we view our neighbors, and how are we exercising and protecting this valuable trust with one another?
This virtual exhibit will be on view exclusively here online from June 25 to July 31.
