Brooklyn-based artist Howard Lerner layers images that are drawn, painted, and cut up from old vinyl albums to create visual analogies for the viewer. His scenes are constructed from the fantastical and the ordinary, weaving together the ancestries of multiple cultures including dramatic narratives from Judeo-Christian scriptures. Lerner’s icons invite us to contemplate the connection between our everyday physical realities and the mysteries and wonders of things unseen.

Curated by Blake J. Ruehrwein, this exhibition opens on May 4 with a reception from 6:30 - 8:30 pm featuring music by accordion player Evan Perry-Giblin. The artist will be present at the reception to share about his work.

Hallowed Be Thy Name depicts Jason Hamacher’s first two trips to Syria in 2006 and 2007, and highlights Syria’s endangered Christian communities through its documentation of important historical sites that have since been damaged or destroyed in the Syrian civil war. Seeing these beautiful traditions, places and communities that were formative in the Early Church’s flourishing helps to contextualize the anger, fear and frustration felt by the displaced and persecuted, and serves as a reminder to the sanctity of life and faith.

Physical nourishment is not the sole purpose of eating: we often eat to connect with, celebrate, comfort, or even avoid our feelings. Desserts, specifically, are a conflicting category of food. They get a bad rap for health reasons, but are ubiquitous at social gatherings as gifts and treats. In this ongong body of work, Jessica Olah explores what food means to us in the emotional, mental, and social parts of our being while working out her own relationship with dessert and the idea of "missing out".

To "illuminate" means to "light up" or "help to clarify and explain." For five years, Spark and Echo Arts has been commissioning artists to create new work and share personal perspectives on Bible passages, bringing fresh illumination to ancient text. This project allows the artist to actively engage in meditation, interpretation and even application of living, breathing words. Exhibited in this show is a collection of highlights from the past five years: a celebration of individual and collective responses to the Bible.

We are known by our face: our physical features, the expression of our feelings, our identities of gender and ethnicity - our face is what we present to the world and how the world perceives us. But what does it mean to truly see and be seen? What is our true face?

This show features the work of Lydia Samson, Sophia Dawson and Elias Popa. The artists in Till We Have Faces share a common interest in exploring reality and identity through studying the faces of various individuals, inviting you to consider your own biases, assumptions and interpretations of what is real.

Streetopolis is an exhibition of contemporary fine art, urban and documentary photographers responding to the theme of ‘streets of the world’. The photographers are part of the Association of Urban Photographers, an international collective focusing on the nature of urban and city spaces. The artists are all urbanists whose work focuses on aspects of urban life, including landscape, architecture, portraiture, objects and the street.

The aim of this exhibition is to expand on notions of what constitutes contemporary street photography and to offer an alternative range of practices that link street cultures back to the wider context of urban life. In doing so, the artists’ practices suggest an alternative set of visual imaginations from those associated with traditional documentary narratives, from personal perspectives of streets that have meaning to them within the context of the cities they inhabit or have visited.

Leigh Carlson has been living in New York City and working as a commercial actor and print model for over thirty years. Photography has been a lifelong passion, and in recent years Leigh has begun a more serious pursuit on the other side of the camera. "I Love A Parade" started as a way to show family and friends a slice of New York City life. The project covers miles of parade routes, in all kinds of weather, and presents a behind-the-scenes look at parades and the people who march in them.
