"Hope: An Exhibit of Uncertain Faith"
Mar

"Hope: An Exhibit of Uncertain Faith"

The word hope is one used when we desire something but do so with uncertainty. Merriam-Webster defines to hope as "to want something to happen or to be true and think that it could happen or be true." The Biblical concept of hope, however, is defined with a certainty we lack. The Book of Hebrew says, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance of what we do not see." In "Hope: An Exhibit of Uncertain Faith" women of faith in New York City visually work out the challenges and persistence of hope in the face of doubt. Curated by Christina Young.

Exhibiting Artists: Lourdes Bernard, Karen Hartmann, Teuta Ibriqaj, Lindsay Kolk, Teressa Valla and Kristen Somody Whalen

Exhibition opens March 2, 2017, runs through April 9, 2017. Open daily 8 a.m.-9 p.m.

Making Place: interactive art exhibit

A restaurant where we held a special celebration, a bench with our favorite view at the park, or the corner where we received an important phone call: these are all public places that can hold personal meaning. The collection of these special spots in a neighborhood is what can make places meaningful; to make a place for ourselves is both a physical and an emotional act.

W83 Gallery invites you to participate in Making Place, an interactive art project exhibiting the collective memories and places of meaning in our Upper West Side neighborhood. From now through August 25, we invite you to take pictures of places on the UWS special to you in terms of Change, Beauty, Joy, Love or Loss and label it with #MakingPlaceUWS on social media (Instagram, Twitter). Your images will be collectively displayed as part of this exhibition. Share as much or as little as you would like about the significance of the place. Please include the location's name and cross streets. A physical map will be on display for the duration of the exhibit, and we invite you to come by and mark the places tangibly as well.

Exhibit opens July 21, runs through September 4.
Closing reception: Tuesday, August 23, 6:30 - 8:30 pm

'The Spirit Unveiled': Icons of Howard Lerner

Brooklyn-based artist Howard Lerner layers images that are drawn, painted, and cut up from old vinyl albums to create visual analogies for the viewer. His scenes are constructed from the fantastical and the ordinary, weaving together the ancestries of multiple cultures including dramatic narratives from Judeo-Christian scriptures. Lerner’s icons invite us to contemplate the connection between our everyday physical realities and the mysteries and wonders of things unseen.

Curated by Blake J. Ruehrwein, this exhibition opens on May 4 with a reception from 6:30 - 8:30 pm featuring music by accordion player Evan Perry-Giblin. The artist will be present at the reception to share about his work.

'Hallowed Be Thy Name': Jason Hamacher

Hallowed Be Thy Name depicts Jason Hamacher’s first two trips to Syria in 2006 and 2007, and highlights Syria’s endangered Christian communities through its documentation of important historical sites that have since been damaged or destroyed in the Syrian civil war. Seeing these beautiful traditions, places and communities that were formative in the Early Church’s flourishing helps to contextualize the anger, fear and frustration felt by the displaced and persecuted, and serves as a reminder to the sanctity of life and faith.

Curated by Christina Young

Exhibit runs March 15 through May 1, 2016.

'Desserted': Jessica Olah

Physical nourishment is not the sole purpose of eating: we often eat to connect with, celebrate, comfort, or even avoid our feelings. Desserts, specifically, are a conflicting category of food. They get a bad rap for health reasons, but are ubiquitous at social gatherings as gifts and treats. In this ongong body of work, Jessica Olah explores what food means to us in the emotional, mental, and social parts of our being while working out her own relationship with dessert and the idea of "missing out".

Curated by Christina Young

Exhibit runs February 9 through March 6, 2016. NOTE: Exhibit extended through March 10.
On view daily from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm.

The opening reception coincides with Fat Tuesday and the start of Lent, with plenty of sweet treats to be served!

"Streetopolis": Guided Photography Walk

Street Photography: Approaches, Practices and Methods
Guided Photography Walk

In conjunction with the Streetopolis exhibition and Artists’ Talk, the Association of Urban Photographers (AUP) will run a one-day workshop / guided photo walk on the Upper West Side. The main focus will be to encourage participants to consider how they might approach photographing in the street from a range of perspectives.

This workshop will be of particular interest to artists and photographers interested in rethinking how they might engage with critical urbanism and how ‘the street’ features within an expanded notion of ‘the urban’. Focus will be on approaches taken to image-making by five of the exhibiting artists: Kyler Zeleny, David Kendall, Yanina Shevchenko, Paul Halliday and Rebecca Locke. These artists are all experienced urban photographers and instructors regularly working within street environments, and will take participants out on a guided walk in the neighborhood followed by a feedback session. Use of cameras and smartphone cameras are both welcome.

Please note that space is limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

"Streetopolis": Association of Urban Photographers exhibition

Streetopolis is an exhibition of contemporary fine art, urban and documentary photographers responding to the theme of ‘streets of the world’. The photographers are part of the Association of Urban Photographers, an international collective focusing on the nature of urban and city spaces. The artists are all urbanists whose work focuses on aspects of urban life, including landscape, architecture, portraiture, objects and the street.

The aim of this exhibition is to expand on notions of what constitutes contemporary street photography and to offer an alternative range of practices that link street cultures back to the wider context of urban life. In doing so, the artists’ practices suggest an alternative set of visual imaginations from those associated with traditional documentary narratives, from personal perspectives of streets that have meaning to them within the context of the cities they inhabit or have visited.

Exhibiting artists include:
David Kendall, Diego Ferrari, Isidro Ramirez, Kyler Zeleny, Lene Hald, Michael Frank, Paul Halliday, Peter Coles, Rachel Sarah Jones, Rebecca Locke, Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo, Yanina Shevchenko

Exhibit opens September 10 and runs through October 8, available for viewing 8:00 am to 9:00 pm daily.
